Ex-Napoli defender Maksimovic became a Montpellier player. The team conceded 29 goals in 9 rounds

The experienced Serbian has not played since April and previously missed the 2022/23 season

Outsider Ligue 1 Montpellier announced the signing of ex-defender as a free agent Napoli And Serbian national team Nikola Maksimovich.

The 32-year-old footballer remained without a club after parting with Hatayspor. The last time he took to the field in an official match was in April 2024. Previously, he missed the 2022/23 season before joining the Turkish club.

Montpellier decided to turn to the candidacy of the Serbian player against the backdrop of injuries to several central defenders (Kiki Kouyaté, Christopher Julien) and an extremely unenviable defensive situation in general. The team, recently led by Jean-Louis Gasse, conceded 29 goals in 9 rounds of the championship and is at the bottom of the standings with four points.

Maksimovic is known for his performances for Torino (2013 – 2016) and Napoli (2016 – 2021). Nicola spent the 2021/22 season in Genoa. There was also a short period in his career at Spartak Moscow (January – June 2018). The center back played 25 matches for the Serbian national team, but did not participate in major tournaments.

On Sunday, October 3, Montpellier will play away against another outsider – Le Havre (17th place, 6 points).
