Famous figure skater, choreographer and producer Ilya Averbukh commented on the imposition of sanctions against figure skaters Povilas Vanagas and Margarita Drobyazko.
On August 10, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda signed a decree excluding Drobiazko and Vanagas from the list of holders of the Order of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas, 5th degree. Nauseda, after signing the decree, said that all the merits of Drobyazko and Vanagas for the country were barred by the decision to perform in Tatiana Navka’s show in Sochi.
– I have already said once that it is not for the officials to decide and not for the officials to deprive those titles which are won in a real, absolutely honest sports fight. Viktor Petrenko, Margarita Drobyazko and Povilas Vanagas, Albena Denkova and Maxim Stavisky are the pillars of figure skating in their country, they have done a lot for the development of figure skating in their country. Their decisions are their decisions. What they won – officials do not have the right to strike out, – Averbukh told the “Championship”.
