Russian figure skater Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva dancing in ice dance with Egor Bazin According to , Russian men’s singles players, who shine in domestic competitions, will lead young and promising players and, in turn, achieve success on the international stage.
Currently, Russian figure skaters are suspended from participation in competitions under the auspices of the International Skating Union (ISU) due to the situation in Ukraine.
The Russian Grand Prix stage is taking place these days in Kazan. The ISU Grand Prix stage ended in Angers (France), and the duet of Evgeniy Loparev and Geoffrey Brissot, representing France, became the best in ice dancing.
— How do you find the start of the season in Russia and around the world? Are there things that really catch your attention?
Khudayberdieva: Our guys are creating some kind of sensation! I’m extremely proud of the guys who work and, to some extent, motivate us all. Seeing them do this – in a good way – is just very enjoyable.
There is a certain decline in pair skating: not in quality, but in number of participants. In Kazan, only two couples were announced, certainly of the highest level. Is everyone sick? This turned out to be strange, of course.
Dancers… They said a few seasons ago that there was a crisis. Now not all couples are allowed in because there is not enough room. So if there was a crisis, it’s over. Even though we said there was no crisis. A huge ice dancing competition and lots of couples. So awesome!
Around the world, the figure skating season for dancers has gotten off to an unexpected start. Now, on the French scene, the favorites have lost due to mistakes.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Zhenya Lopareva, with whom I started, from the age of five we skated together and grew up. At first we were part of the Russian ice dancing team, then Zhenya began to compete for France. I’m happy to see how they (with Geoffrey Brissot) are evolving. It’s a bit enviable, of course, that there is an opportunity to compete, but Zhenya absolutely deserves it, and I’m very happy that they are progressing.
– Do you communicate?
Khudaiberdieva: Yes, I spent a vacation in France this year. We saw each other, we kissed, we cried.
Bazin: But they don’t have the opportunity to come to us in Krasnoyarsk. In Krasnoyarsk, I think it will be very, very hot. Despite the negative temperature. I hope the fans are ready and will fill the stands, scream, rejoice and we will please them with good skating.
— When times improve and we return to international competitions, will the guys be able to impose a fight on the same Malinin?
Khudaiberdieva: When everything gets better, I think an even stronger generation will grow there, our guys who are tearing each other now will lead the younger ones. In fact, they are still quite old. Zhenya Semenenko, Petya Gumennik, Mark Kondratyuk are not 16-17 years old. Our leaders motivate the next generation to grow, not be sad. And this next generation will certainly be present in international competitions.
Bazin: We don’t know what will happen in the future. In terms of content, the guys are exactly on the level, if not above, the leaders. Their content is the same, more or less, and ours also skates better.
