A court in the Kenyan town of Eldoret has sentenced two men to 35 years in prison each for the murder of Ugandan track and field athlete Benjamin Kiplagat, reports Voice of Eastleigh .
In January 2024, the body of a 34-year-old athlete was found in a car in Kenya with a stab wound to the neck.
CCTV footage was presented as evidence against David Loquere, 25, and Peter Halloumi, 30. The images show one of the attackers, armed with a knife, threatening the athlete while his accomplice stands nearby. Kiplagat’s family had asked for life sentences for the two men, but the judge ruled that 35 years in prison was a sentence commensurate with the actions of those found guilty. Lokere and Halloumi have 14 days to appeal.
Kiplagat specialized in the steeplechase, taking ninth place at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and winning bronze at the 2012 African Championships.
