Figure skater Alena Kostornaya who practices pair skating with her husband Georgy Kunitsa, said that the reasons for suspending their careers are simple and understandable, and also assured a return to the sport.

Previously, the athletes announced that they had suspended their careers for two seasons.

— I loved figure skating and will continue to love it, I have always been dedicated and grateful to my fans. First, I told them that Georgiy and I had taken a two-season break. The reasons for our decision are simple and clear. And we found complete understanding from the leadership of our federation, for which we are very grateful to everyone.

We will come back, whatever position we are in to do so. We will ride as long as we have the strength,” Kostornaya wrote on her Telegram channel.

Last season, the duo took ninth place at the Russian Pair Skating Championships. Kostornaya is the 2020 European singles skating champion; she has competed as a pair since 2023.
