Olympic speed skating champion Svetlana Zhurova commented on the words Richard McLaren on the need to admit Russian athletes to international tournaments.
Earlier, the head of the independent World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) commission investigating the 2014 Olympics doping scandal case, McLaren, in an interview with Sportschau, called for the admission Russian athletes at international competitions.
– According to his own beliefs, McLaren never opposed Russia. He believed he was fighting for a clean sport. Now, not to sound incoherent, he made such a statement. From now on, no one can accuse him of partiality towards our country and external pressure. He is clearly of the opinion that clean athletes who are not guilty of using illegal drugs should not be punished. And he sincerely believes that national athletes should not suffer from the current political situation. Otherwise, we don’t talk about sports anymore. Whether he is able to convince others or not is a big question,” RT Zhurova quotes.
In 2016, McLaren released a report that Russia had a state system that handled doping samples and covered up athletes. In 2017, Vitaly Smirnov, who headed the Independent Public Anti-Doping Commission, said McLaren had dropped allegations of state support for Russian doping.
