Both Teofimo and Devin’s belts will be on the line
World champion version WBC junior welterweight Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KO) can return to the ring with a confrontation with the world champion WBO junior welterweight Teofimo Lopez (21–1, 13 KOs).
Haney and Lopez may meet in a show planned by Top Rank head Bob Arum. The event is planned for 2025.
Haney fought his last fight in late April in Brooklyn against Ryan Garcia. Devin was knocked down three times during the fight. According to the judges’ notes, Ryan triumphed with scores of 114:110 and 115:109. Another judge recorded a draw (112:112).
Garcia, despite the victory, did not take the championship belt from Haney, as he exceeded the agreed weight category limit. According to WBC head Mauricio Sulaiman, the belt does not become vacant, but remains with Devin. After the defeat, Haney himself immediately hinted at revenge.
At the end of May, it became known that Garcia failed a repeat doping test after his fight with Devin Haney. The second sample, like the first, showed a positive result for ostarine, a drug that is used to improve endurance performance. Therefore, Haney still remains undefeated in the professional ring, and the fight against Ryan Garcia was declared invalid.
Teofimo, in his last fight (on the night of June 30), successfully defended his title, defeating Canadian Steve Claggett by unanimous decision.
After this, Teofimo first challenged Isaac Cruz (26-2-1, 18 KOs), the WBA junior welterweight title holder, and then announced his intention to change divisions and fight the former undisputed champion in two weight categories, Terence Crawford.
