The main heroine of the confrontation was Paolini, who won both singles and doubles
Italy won a strong-willed victory over Japan in the first match of the 1/4 finals Billie Jean King Cup 2024 – 2:1.
The confrontation began with a surprise – a strong-willed victory of Ena Shibahara from the second hundred of the WTA rankings over Elisabetta Cocciaretto (54th racket in the world). The Italian confidently won the first set (6:3), but lost both subsequent sets with a score of 4:6.
Jasmine Paolini had to take matters into her own hands. To defeat Moyuka Uchijima, the fourth racket of the world ranking needed two sets and 76 minutes. In each game, the Italian scored two breaks against one.
In doubles, Paolini also rose to the occasion, teaming with Sara Errani. The Italians won quite confidently in two sets, and for Jasmine the scenario of her previous fight was largely repeated – right down to the score and total time.
The Italian team became the first participant in the semi-finals of the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup. Let us remind you that the other quarterfinal pairs are Australia – Slovakia, Czech Republic – Poland and Canada – Great Britain.
