Sagnol: I’m a little disappointed – we deserved more after the break

Georgia lost to Ukraine at home in the first half, but improved in the second and evened the score

Head coach Georgian national team Willie Sagnol commented on the home draw in the fifth round match of Group B1 Nations League 2024/25 against Ukraine (1:1).

“I think we started the game very well, but the mistake we made with Ukraine’s goal made us not perform so well in the last 20 minutes of the first half.”

“I think my players played at a very high level. Now it’s difficult to analyze the whole match at once, but it seems to me that the second half was one of the best for us during the time that I lead the Georgian national team.”

“I’m a little disappointed because I think we deserved more with our performance after the break. However, we made a few mistakes that at this level can cause us a lot of harm.”

Let us remind you that Ukraine won the first half in Batumi thanks to an early goal – after Mikhail Mudrik’s cross, the ball was deflected into his own net by Solomon Kvirkvelia. The hosts improved after the break and pulled back 14 minutes before the end – substitute Georges Mikautadze played the finishing touch after Anatoly Trubin made a save.

The Ukrainian national team, having scored 5 points, is still last in its quartet, having more than a real chance of relegation to Division C. The fate of Sergei Rebrov’s team will be decided in the final match with the Albanian national team, which will take place in Tirana on November 19.

Georgia has 7 points after five rounds. In their final match, Sagnol’s team will play against the Czech Republic away.
