Figure skater Zhdanova: “When I broke my toe, I really wanted to compete”

Figure skaters Varvara Zhdanova and Timur Babaev-Smirnov, who practice ice dancing, said they plan to quickly recover from their partner’s injury and participate in the competition.

The fourth stage of the Russian Grand Prix began on Saturday in Moscow. Zhdanova and Babaev-Smirnov scored 75.68 points and took third place after the short program of the duet dance competition. The first are Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin (85.67), the second are Irina Khavronina and David Narizhny (83.08).

Babaev-Smirnov: We are happy. Our main task was to enjoy the show, we wanted to please the audience.

Zhdanova: We wanted to have fun. When you enter such a big arena, you feel pleasure.

— Were there any concerns when you followed Russian music?

Zhdanova: It’s easier to skate to a Russian composition, you understand its meaning and it’s easier to convey the idea.

— Varya, you were injured at the start of the season, did you want to compete even more?

Zhdanova: I really wanted to compete when I broke my toe. We were confident that I would recover. I quickly recovered and we started preparing the stages.

— What do you think about performing on two stages in a row?

Zhdanova: You must be prepared that there will be no let-up.

Babaev-Smirnov: Everything happens on adrenaline. It can be said that it is even easier to complete two stages in a row.

— Varya, how much time do you spend preparing the whole image?

Zhdanova: This year I have my hand full, it has become easier. Last season I spent a lot of time on the image.

Babaev-Smirnov: My biggest fear was that Varya’s hat would fall off.

The skaters will perform free dances on Sunday.
