Fritz defeated de Minaur, but this victory remained the only one for his team
Team Australia won over USA in the 1/4 final match Davis Cup 2024 – 2:1.
In the opening match, Thanasi Kokkinakis easily won the first set against Ben Shelton, but in the second game the American redeemed himself – a single break in the first game was enough. The decisive game ended in a crazy tie-break, where the opponents missed 10 match points between them, and yet Kokkinakis snatched victory on the seventh attempt – 16:14.
The confrontation continued with a duel between two tennis players from the top 10. Taylor Fritz, a finalist at the recent Finals, took an hour and 11 minutes to defeat Alex de Minaur. The Australian led 2:0 in the second set, but his opponent managed to turn the tide of the game and at the same time equalize the score in the national team match.
The decisive battle for Australia was won by Matthew Ebden (winner of the 2024 Olympics in doubles) and Jordan Thompson. Initially, they were supposed to be opposed by the finalists of the same Olympic Games, Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram, but the American tandem was replaced by Shelton paired with Tommy Paul. As a result, Ebden and Thompson won in two sets and took Australia to the third consecutive Davis Cup semi-final.
We would like to remind you that earlier the semi-finalists of the tournament were the teams of the Netherlands and Germany. Australia will compete with the winner of the Italy-Argentina confrontation to reach the final.
