Swimming world record holder Evgenia Chikunova told that last month she had the coronavirus three times and so preparations for the Russian Short Course Championships did not go as planned.
Chikunova clocked the third time (30.20 seconds) in the 50m breaststroke semi-final at the Russian Short Course Swimming Championships, taking place in St. Petersburg. The best result is Ralina Gilyazova (30.05), the second is Yulia Efimova (30.18).
— What is your condition at this tournament? Home championship, but you have recently suffered from illness.
— Yes, I had coronavirus. And in October I got sick three times. Three weeks have passed for me; I haven’t done a single training job. A week ago I went swimming and I just hope for the best. Something good.
– Where did you get it?
“To be honest, I don’t even know exactly where I got it. » But I discovered Covid by doing an antibody test. I saw that there were quite a few. And yet, yes, there was an illness.
— Was there a risk in participating in this championship? After all, there can be complications.
“I had a wonderful experience three years ago, when four days after a negative Covid test, I went out and started swimming in the league, and everything was fine. And then I had even more time.
Of course, coach Vita Vladimirovna and I were still a little scared. But we still decided to test our strengths. And from a sporting point of view, I’m interested in my shape. I would like to see what I am ready for, even with such preparation.
— What is your main motivation for participating in the Russian Championship, other than curiosity?
— To be honest, that’s the main motivation. I’m looking forward to the 200m breaststroke. On some level, to be honest, I’m afraid of swimming. Because I don’t feel safe, I have a lot of trouble breathing. On the other hand, it doesn’t matter how well I swim – good or bad. The main thing is that I swim and that’s it, ”Chikunova told the correspondent.
