All-Russian Athletics Federation President Pyotr Fradkov said Russian athletics was in a difficult situation, but he intended to improve domestic competitions.
On November 23 in Moscow the report and electoral conference of the ARAF took place, at which Fradkov was elected. Another candidate for the position was Oleg Kurbatov; since 2020, the position has been held by Petr Ivanov.
— An important event for me is the leadership of one of the largest federations with a long history. It is a grassroots sport in different parts of the country. We understand that many people play sports. It’s a lot of work.
Today the situation is difficult. I believe that we have overcome the difficult period in the fight against doping and that we will improve our relations. There are limitations and non-admissions. I believe we will use this time to strengthen ourselves. We will organize internal competitions and strengthen the federation in terms of competitiveness. We will interact with friendly countries.
— What is currently happening with the coaches of this sport?
— This is a vast area of work. Coaches are the key people who develop young people. People’s motivations are different; in the regions, the methods of remuneration of coaches must be rethought. Find extra-budgetary sources for professionals. We must popularize the work of coaching and sport in general. The competitions must be spectacular,” reports the correspondent, according to Fradkov’s words.
In March 2023, World Athletics reinstated its membership in the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) after seven and a half years. Despite this, the suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes was extended due to the situation in Ukraine.
