Florentino Perez: We are witnessing the decline of football, the calendar of which is designed without taking into account the main stakeholders – players, clubs and fans

A longtime follower of the Super League criticized FIFA and UEFA

President of Madrid Real Madrid Florentino Perez shared his thoughts on the current situation in football.

“I have been warning for a long time that our beloved sport is gravely wounded. This is evidenced by many social and economic indicators. The situation has never been as serious as it is now. Almost all major leagues are experiencing significant setbacks.”

“If domestic leagues are experiencing increasing difficulties, then the picture is no better in European competitions. The new format of the Champions League, as we predicted, has shown that it is not the solution to the problems. UEFA has increased the number of matches, but each of them has much less significance than before. And the competition will excite the passions of the fans only at the end of the season, and not at the beginning, as one might expect.”

“FIFA has significantly expanded the window for national teams and, in addition, has established the Club World Cup, which will deprive football players of the necessary annual rest. UEFA has increased the number of non-essential and unnecessary matches in its European competitions, with no regard for the welfare of the players. He also created a new tournament – the League of Nations. The result is the decline of football, whose calendar and formats are designed without taking into account the main stakeholders in the sport: players, clubs and fans.”

“In addition, the excessive calendar in modern football takes a toll on the well-being of players who struggle to cope with the unprecedented schedule. This situation not only affects their results, but is also directly related to the alarming increase in injuries.”

77-year-old Perez has led Real Madrid since 2000 (with a three-year break). During his reign, Los Blancos won 61 trophies, including seven league and Champions League triumphs. In May of this year, Florentino became the most titled functionary in the history of the club, surpassing the legendary Santiago Bernabeu in the number of trophies. It was recently revealed that Real Madrid’s training ground will be renamed in honor of the current Blancos president.

Perez is also notorious as the chairman of the Super League project, which in 2021 almost caused a serious split in European football.
