Coach Lasitskene explained how fear helps an athlete win

Gennady Gabrielyan, coach of the Olympic high jump champion Maria Lasitskene said that the fear of important competitions gives the Russian athlete extra strength.

– In this case, we still have a performance training mode. In Bryansk there were disappointing factors, let’s say, but in general I always tell Masha that she should go to every exam, every start like the first and last time. Whether it’s the city championship or the Olympics. And internal accountability has to match that.

When Masha was small and began to participate in the championship of a sports school, in the championships of the city, of the Southern Federal District, and then in Russia, which gave her the opportunity to go to the first Olympics in youth, she had the same mental attitude and message. And she was still shaking the same way. I gave in to this fear. He said: “Masha, be afraid, be afraid.” His fears flow into the channel where all internal barriers are overcome, quotes RT Gabrielyan.

The specialist also recalled how they participated in the Russian championship in Bryansk when Lasitsken was 14 years old.

— For us, it was the first start at such a level. Masha was very small, but she had to compete with girls who are one and a half heads taller. She was worried. But when the competition started, she performed a miracle. With trembling knees, she jumped 1.73m and won, although I could clearly see that the girls did not perceive her as a rival at all. Since then, I have been repeatedly convinced: if Masha seems like a helpless child or, God forbid, cries, wait, such an inner beast is growing there, ”Gabrielyan added.

Lasitskene is the Tokyo Games champion, triple world champion.
