Kliment Kolesnikov: “I haven’t changed my mind and I still won’t go to the World Cup in Budapest”

Double Olympic medalist Kliment Kolesnikov told he would not change his decision regarding the Short Course World Championships in Budapest.

On Sunday, Kolesnikov won the 100m medley final for the first time and, an hour later, the 50m backstroke final at the Russian Short Course Swimming Championships in St. Petersburg. This Russian national participation had qualifying status for participation in the next World Championship. Kolesnikov has previously stated that he has no plans to participate in the international tournament in Budapest.

— In one evening, you won two finals and you overtook very strong guys. How did you do it?

– Well, you have to tend the bar. I try. I know a lot of people support me and worry about me. They want me to win. It’s clear that I do this first and foremost for myself. I really don’t want to give up my job just yet. The 100 back showed that it is still possible to put in a lot of effort in this championship, posting seconds that were not exactly cool, but worthy of getting on the podium.

— Swimmers are now registering for the Short Course World Championships, which will take place December 10-15. You are in such good shape that you would certainly win medals there, but you yourself refused to go to Budapest. Maybe you’ll change your mind?

– I understand the situation, yes. But I have already made a decision for myself. Today, I’m not ready to go. Even with all these current conditions. But I will watch with interest how our guys perform in Budapest. My favorite friends, I know them all, I will support them,” Kolesnikov told .
