Honored coach of the USSR in figure skating Tatyana Tarasova told that the children of the people who made the decisions regarding the tennis player’s positive doping tests Igi Schwiatek and figure skaters Kamila Valieva should experience the same feelings as the Russian woman.
– What justice should we expect, where should we complain, who should we punch in the face? The tennis player gets a month, but Kamila, this child, is essentially disqualified for life.
“It’s strange to see some athletes come and say, ‘Oh, it’s an accident, it’s not my fault.’ And they are forgiven. And Valieva suffered a heavy punishment.
“It’s an injustice, I want their children to experience the same thing as Valieva,” Tarasova told .
On Thursday, the International Tennis Integrity Agency said world number 2 Schwiatek had tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine. The sample was withdrawn from competition in August 2024. The result was a finding of no substantial fault or negligence and a one-month suspension. Szwiatek was provisionally suspended effective September 12, 2024, after which she successfully appealed and missed three tournaments.
On November 27, Schwiatek publicly admitted to violating anti-doping rules and accepted the sanction. Time served under a temporary suspension will count toward the period of ineligibility. She will serve the remaining 8 days of disqualification during the offseason until December 4.
The ITIA admitted that the positive test was due to contamination of an over-the-counter medicine (melatonin) produced and sold in Poland that the 23-year-old tennis player was taking to treat jet lag and sleep problems, and that the contamination was therefore not intentional.
At the end of January, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended Valieva for four years for violating anti-doping rules. The Russian’s suspension period begins on December 25, 2021 and her results have been canceled since that date. The athlete was also deprived of gold medals at the 2022 Beijing Olympics in the team tournament and at the 2022 European Championships. Trimetazidine was found in the athlete’s sample.
