The world champion blocked George Russell on his slow lap, affecting the Briton’s further result
Four-time world champion Max Verstappen received a one-place grid penalty and lost pole position Qatar Grand Prix.
The incident for which the Dutchman was fined occurred in the third qualifying round. Max drove slowly before his qualifying lap, and George Russell caught up with him in one of the corners. The Briton had to move away from the junction with the slow car onto the gravel. The damaged set of tires performed worse on George’s next fast lap, affecting his result.
Russell pointed out to the stewards that, although both drivers were on a slow lap, Verstappen’s car should not have taken up the racing line in the high-speed corner. The jury decided that the case was complex and fined the Dutchman one place instead of the standard penalty of three places.
Russell will take first place on the grid for the Qatar Grand Prix, with Verstappen second. The next row is made up of McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastriu.
The Qatar Grand Prix will take place on Sunday, December 1st. The race starts at 18:00.
Let us remind you that the driver Verstappen won the fourth world championship title in Formula 1 in a row in the current 2024 season. Until the end of the campaign, in addition to the current stage in Qatar, only the UAE Grand Prix remains, which will take place next weekend.
