Emmanuel’s first attempt, made six months ago, ended in defeat from Berinchik
WBO super featherweight title holder Emmanuel Navarrete (38-2-1, 31 KO) said that he would not mind gaining 5 pounds again in the future and returning to light weightto once again try to become a champion in four weight categories.
“It’s easy to reach 135 [фунтов]and then go back to 130 to fight Valdez, who earned the opportunity to win the world title, becoming the mandatory challenger for the title that I still hold. And I think that would be a more attractive fight than, for example, staying at lightweight and fighting someone who is ranked 5th, 10th or 8th in the rankings. I think because of the first fight with Valdez and the appeal that he has, it became more real. So that helped me make my decision.”
“We may do something in the 135 in the future. But I shouldn’t rush. I have to do everything calmly and do better. And when such an opportunity arises, we will do everything to win the title in the fourth weight category.”
The Mexican has already made such an attempt before. This spring, he specially moved up from super featherweight (up to 130 pounds or 59 kilograms) to lightweight (135 pounds / 61.2 kg) in order to fight with Ukrainian Denis Berinchyk for the then vacant WBO lightweight champion belt. As a result, the Ukrainian won a split decision and won the long-awaited title. Emmanuel, accordingly, missed the opportunity to become world champion in four different weight categories.
In the summer, the same WBO ordered Navarrete to have a rematch with compatriot Oscar Valdez, whom he had previously (in August 2023) defeated on points and defended the WBO super featherweight title. This fight will take place on December 7 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix (Arizona, USA).
