Norwegian four-time Olympic champion Teresa Johaug finished fourth in the 20 km freestyle at the first stage of the cross-country skiing World Cup in Ruka, Finland.
The victory was won by American Jessica Diggins, who covered the distance in 51 minutes 19.3 seconds. Swede Johanna Sundling (+0.3 seconds) finished second, while the top three were completed by Norwegian Heidi Weng (+2.5). The gap between Johaug and the winner was 4.2 seconds.
Johaug, 36, is a 14-time world champion and three-time World Cup winner. After the 2021/22 season she announced her retirement, but in August 2024 she announced her return to the sport and her desire to compete in the 2025 World Championships on home soil in Trondheim.
In the men’s 20 km freestyle, Norwegian Harald Amundsen won (46 minutes 4 seconds), ahead of his compatriots Jan Jensen (+0.9) and Martin Njengeth (+1.9).
