Lucescu: Are Ukrainian footballers at war? They would have died on the first day

Dynamo mentor told how he helped the players get out of the country in the early days of the war

Dynamo head coach Mircea Lucescu believes that Ukrainian football players should defend the country as athletes, and not by participating in hostilities.

“My two friends and I did everything to get Ukrainian football players out of the country. If they had to go to war, they would die on the first day. Their purpose is to protect the image of the state as athletes. I was one of those who helped a lot along with the Romanian Football Federation and UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin.”

“Football makes them stop thinking about what is going on there, but when I see sad faces, I feel like I should cheer them up. The only thing that can really cheer you up is positive results, they help you move forward.”

Earlier, Lucescu said that he arrived in Kyiv to demonstrate that life in the capital and in Ukraine continues.

The new season in the Premier League starts on August 23.
