World figure skating champion Maria Butyrskaya believes that Russian skaters will change sports citizenship in order to participate in international tournaments.
On Friday it became known that 15-year-old Ulyana Shiryaeva moved to Canada, she was allowed to speak at a local tournament, which takes place from August 18 to 21 in Burnaby.
– It cannot be ruled out that Shiryaeva left to be able to play in international tournaments, as the Russians are currently not allowed to do so. Unfortunately, some athletes in such a situation will be sent to other countries. People are looking for ways to get out of the predicament that the national figure skating finds itself in. Changing nationality is one of the options. With a new passport you get new opportunities.
She’s not the first and she won’t be the last. Of course, she could leave, frightened by the strong competition in the country. However, it is in such a struggle that one can truly progress. I remember Russians playing for other national teams. There, they are deprived of this possibility. Everything is chic with them: they do not know their equals at the national level and regularly go to major competitions. But at the same time, the athletes are weakening. This factor greatly affects the results, – quotes the words of Butyrskaya RT.
Russian figure skaters have been suspended from competitions under the auspices of the International Skating Union (ISU) due to the situation in Ukraine.
