“FFKKR should not prevent figure skaters from leaving Russia” – Alena Leonova

Silver medalist at the world championships Alena Leonova told Sport Day after Day that she hadn’t heard anything about figure skater Uliana Shiryaeva moving to Canada, and also stressed that the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR) should not stop athletes from move to another country.

In 2021, Shiryaeva won junior bronze at the Russian Cup stage. At the 2022 Russian Junior Championship, she took 11th place.

– It’s a unique story. And the girl was not particularly well-known. I, at least, have not heard anything about such a figure skater. Apparently, it’s the new generation. I think at this stage there is nothing wrong with his transition to another federation. A person wants to participate in international competitions. Why not?

– Should our federation release athletes or should we keep them?

– On the one hand, you have to hold on. On the other hand, this should not hinder the development of athletes. The skaters want to compete on the international stage, but in Russia there is no such opportunity, so our federation should not keep them. It all depends on what type of skater it is. If conditionally Kamila Valieva wants to leave, then we have to think about it and prevent these golden athletes from leaving our country,” Leonova said.
