“Hands down – I can’t swim” – Girev on dealing with health issues

Olympic medalist in Tokyo Ivan Girev said that after succeeding as a junior, he faced serious health issues that he had to overcome on his way to the Olympic medal.

Girev, 22, became the silver medalist in the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay at the Tokyo Games.

— The day started with me measuring the pressure and praying for no nosebleeds. Sometimes it was scary.

– What was that?

“I don’t know myself. And not a single doctor answered this question, even deadly diagnoses were made. In the end, it all came down to the fact that I just needed to give time. Puberty, the transitional period, apparently helped, but it was more of a complication after childhood trauma or something planned from the very beginning. Hands dropped then: I can’t swim.

Finally, the doctors helped me. My wonderful pool manager Gulnara Dzhemalovna Romanadze sent me to Germany for rehabilitation. They managed to solve this problem and thanks to incredible efforts, efforts, I was able to go back, stop suffering from ailments that did not allow me to live in peace.
