International Skating Union (ISU) has the right to ignore International Olympic Committee recommendations and lift sanctions against Russian athletes, says three-time Olympic figure skating champion, State Duma deputy Irina Rodnina .
The ISU previously announced that Russian athletes are not eligible to compete under its auspices due to the situation in Ukraine.
– It is difficult to say whether the additional withdrawal of national skaters can lead to an even more notable reduction in the ISU budget. It is also impossible to predict whether this could lead to the lifting of sanctions. But all federations have the right to make such decisions themselves, despite the recommendations of the IOC. And we see exceptions to the rules, for example, in the face of judoists. The UIS also has the right to exercise independence, – quotes RT Rodnina.
