Pistorius, athletic amputee, serving time for killing his girlfriend, asks for early release

South African amputee runner Oscar Pistorius who is serving a prison sentence for the murder of his girlfriend Reva Steenkamp in 2013, wants to seek parole in court, reports news from heaven .

According to South African law, prisoners must serve at least half of their sentence and go through a hearing between the relatives of the victim and the offender before applying for early release. Pistorius had a meeting with Stenkamp’s parents on June 22.

– I humbly ask you to note that I have done everything in my power to rehabilitate myself, behave in such a way as to consistently abide by prison rules, and show complete remorse. I have completed all possible programs and fulfilled all the requirements of the Department of Corrections for parole, – Pistorius, 35, told the judges in a statement.

Pistorius killed Stenkamp in their home on the night of February 14, 2013. He fired four shots at the locked restroom door where Steenkamp was, and later explained his actions by mistaking her for a burglar. Pistorius was initially convicted of manslaughter and was sentenced in October 2014 to five years in prison.

At the beginning of December 2015, the Supreme Court of South Africa upheld the prosecution’s protest and declared the athlete guilty of premeditated murder. In July 2016, Pistorius was sentenced to six years in prison. After an appeal of the verdict by the South African public prosecutor’s office, which considered such a sentence too lenient, in November 2017 the sentence was increased to 13 years and 5 months.

Pistorius is a six-time Paralympic champion. He also participated in competitions for able-bodied athletes, including becoming the silver medalist of the 2011 World Championships in the 4 × 400 m relay.
