World figure skating champion Maria Butyrskaya said that the absence of Russians at international competitions negatively affects interest in competitions and the level of competition.
The International Skating Union (ISU), in the context of the situation in Ukraine, has suspended Russians and Belarusians from participating in competitions under its auspices until further notice.
– This is a very difficult time for Russian athletes. My daughter plays tennis. And thank God the ITF did not ban Russians from playing and she can go to tournaments. Most are less fortunate. We just have to hope for the best. This should not last a lifetime: sooner or later the sanctions will end. Moreover, it is impossible to imagine figure skating without Russians. It seems to me that the ISU will soon realize that their absence has a detrimental effect on the level of competition, and on watchability, and on the interest of the public. You just have to wait a bit. It’s one thing to take Russians out of football, another from figure skating, Butyrskaya told RT.
