14-year-old Brazilian figure skater Maria Reikdal performed on stage at the Junior Grand Prix series in Riga and became the first transgender to compete in these competitions.
She took second to last, 33rd place, earning 79.45 points for two programs.
Initially, the adoptive parents called the boy Jojo, then he chose the name Maria Joaquin.
Maria qualified for the 2019 South American Figure Skating Championships, finishing second in regional competitions, but was not allowed to start due to her gender uncertainty.
