Chimishkyan, 1952 Olympic weightlifting champion, dies at 94

1952 Olympic weightlifting champion Rafael Chimishkyan has died at the age of 94, the press service of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Georgia reports on social media.

“The National Olympic Committee of Georgia expresses its deep regrets for the death of the first Georgian Olympic weightlifting champion, 11 times world record holder, multiple European and world champion, the legendary weightlifter Rafael Chimishkyan and expresses its condolences to his family, loved ones and the entire sporting community,” said the NOC of Georgia press release.

Chimishkyan, as part of the USSR national team, won gold at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki (Finland) in the weight category up to 60 kg with a total score of 337.5 kg, which was a world record at the time.
