Honda plans to return to Formula 1 in 2026

Red Bull leased Japanese engine manufacturer’s intellectual property this season

Japanese engine manufacturer Honda plans to return to Formula 1 in 2026. The company has registered as a “interested manufacturer” for a season in which significant changes to the powertrain regulations are expected.

“We have registered as an interested engine manufacturer for 2026. The Formula 1 regulation is moving towards hydrocarbon neutrality. The electrical part of the power plant will be increased. In this direction, the goals of the concern and Formula 1 coincide, ”said Koji Watanabe, president of Honda Racing.

Honda has retired from the Royal Races at the end of the 2021 season. This season, the Red Bull team has leased their technology and intellectual property for engines. After 2025, the Austrian concern plans to launch a completely own engine, and will completely refuse Honda components. The Japanese also intend to become a full-fledged supplier of engines for one of the teams.

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen has won a second consecutive Formula 1 title this season. The team itself became the winner of the constructors’ championship.
