Flying wheels, stalled engines. The first Grand Prix of Formula 1 passed with fines and numerous accidents

It began with the deprivation of three places on the starting grid by Lewis Hamilton.

The first Grand Prix of Formula 1 of the 2020 season was held with fines and numerous accidents. 11 out of 20 riders reached the finish line.

Even before the start of the race, last year’s champion Lewis Hamilton was disqualified. The Briton did not slow down under the yellow flags during yesterday’s qualifying. Cameras recorded the episode, and after a protest from Red Bull, Lewis was stripped of three positions on the starting grid.

During the race itself, several drivers experienced mechanical problems. Engines stalled at Daniel Ricciardo (Renault), Max Verstappen (Red Bull), Lance Stroll (Racing Point). Lost control of Kevin Magnussen. Could not complete the race George Russell, Sebastian Grosjean.

A dramatic episode occurred with Kimi Raikonen. Before the last turn, the Finn’s front wheel was torn off. Barely had time to get away from the accident Sebastian Vettel, walking behind.

After a few laps grappled in the fight for a place Lewis Hamilton and Alex Albon. The Mercedes driver caught the rear wheel of Alex, who was trying to get around Lewis on the outer radius. Car Albon turned several times and he rolled into the tail of the peloton.

Hamilton received a 5 second penalty for this episode, which cost him the podium. Albon was unable to continue the race.

At the very end of the race, Daniil Kvyat finished the fight. The Russian’s rear wheel came off.

Recall that the race was won by Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc came second to the finish line, and McLaren’s representative Lando Norris rounded out the top three.

The next Grand Prix will also take place in Austria on July 12th. In total, it is necessary to conduct eight races – this is the minimum necessary to determine the champion of Formula 1.
