Two-time Dakar rally-raid winner Sam Sunderland, who competes in the motorcycle category, was taken to hospital by helicopter after an accident on the first special of the 2023 stage race.

The incident involving the British occurred at the distance of the 52nd kilometer. According to the competition press service, Sunderland is conscious and mobile, but is suffering from back pain, so the medical team has decided to hospitalize the rider urgently.

Sunderland is 33 years old. He became the winner of the rally raid in 2017 and 2022.

The Dakar 2023, which takes place in Saudi Arabia, will end on January 15.
