Carlos Sainz, three-time Dakar winner, has retired from the marathon rally

Spanish rider Carlos Sainz Sr. finished his Dakar Rally Marathon performance earlier than expected due to an accident on the ninth stage.

At the start of the final stage on Tuesday, the Audi SUV, driven by a 60-year-old Spaniard, overturned after Sainz felt pain in his right arm and sought medical help. He was followed by a helicopter to take the runner to a hospital in Riyadh, but en route he asked the drivers to take him back to the car to continue the race. He joined the navigator, and together they waited for help on the dune.

– Unfortunately, in today’s accident the car was badly damaged and cannot be restored. With great regret, we are forced to refuse a new participation in the Dakar, but the main thing is that nothing serious has happened. Thanks to (navigator) Lucas Cruz and his team for their hard work and dedication,” Sainz wrote on social media.

Sainz Sr. performs in the passenger car category. Previously, he had been heavily fined for not completing one of the stages and losing his chances of winning the overall marathon rally classification.

The Spaniard has won the Dakar three times.

The rally raid takes place in Saudi Arabia and will end on January 15.
