Czech driver Alesh Loprais which competed in the truck class, withdrew from the Dakar Rally after fatally hitting a spectator on the ninth stage, according to Motorsport.
Loprais on Tuesday, in his Praga, rammed a spectator who was in the way of a multi-tonne car and out of sight of the crew at number 508. The Italian fan was sent to hospital, but died during the evacuation. Earlier, Loprais expressed his condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
Dakar organizers and local authorities have opened an investigation into the incident. Loprais refused to participate in the rally, but there is no official confirmation of this information yet.
Loprais, who was 43 on the day of the tragedy, was leading the truck category in the Dakar. Janus van Kasteren from Holland could become the new race leader.
Dakar takes place in Saudi Arabia from December 31 to January 15. The tenth stage of the marathon rally will take place on Wednesday.
