Head of the Silk Way Rally Vladimir Chagin told that many countries want to repeat the stages of the race on their territory.
The “Silk Way” rally will be held from July 5 to July 15 on the Kazan – Moscow route. The total race distance will be 5,222 kilometers, including 2,273 kilometers of high-speed special stages. The last time the Silk Road passed through the territory of other countries was in 2019.
– Which new region of the 2023 edition of the race are you looking forward to with particular emotion?
– Chelyabinsk region. This year we give more foothills of the Ural Mountains. The Silk Road route passed there in 2016 and 2017, but away from the Ural Mountains, because there was a long route to Beijing, Xi’an, and we tried to make a more linear route. Now there will be a ring stage for the public to see the race in more detail.
– Serious public interest?
– Yes. And this question is important for the organizers. The race is not only for the participants, but also for the spectators. And the main task is the safety of people who want to watch the race live. It’s a lot of work, a security plan is being developed.
How many participants have already registered?
— As of May 30, around 90 crews from more than 10 countries.
Is the return of foreign stages in 2024 realistic?
– We all want it – both the organizers and the participants. We want motorsport, and rally raids in particular, to return to the format they had before the coronavirus pandemic and political events.
Do you communicate with foreign colleagues?
Yes, we are in contact. They dream of returning to the Silk Road. And we want it too.
— Which countries have expressed the wish to host the stages of the rally?
– A lot. But it is important that the duration of the race does not exceed 12-14 days, so that it is affordable for participants with a limited budget. It is possible to do a rally in 20-25 days, but it is physically and financially difficult. Therefore, it is important to strike a balance between the length of the course so that it is new and accessible to participants, Chagin told .
The first Silk Way Rally took place in 2009. During the race, its route passed through Russia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, China and Mongolia.
