Formula 1 postpones plan to hold South African Grand Prix in 2024 due to suspicions of the supply of weapons from South Africa to Russia

Return to the track in Kyalami may take place in the 2025 season

Organizers Formula 1 postponed plans for South African Grand Prix in 2024. Recall that the races at the Kyalami track were held from 1967 to 1993.

The management of the “Royal races” still counts on the organization of the stage in Africa in order to fully comply with the status of the “world championship”. However, a return to the Kyalami circuit in Johannesburg is now expected no earlier than 2025.

Formula 1 is afraid of negative image consequences and the disruption of the race due to political problems. Earlier, the US ambassador to South Africa said that the country is secretly supplying weapons to Russia for the war in Ukraine. Recall that due to the full-scale Russian invasion, the leadership of Formula 1 had previously terminated the contract with the Russian Federation to host the Grand Prix.

The previous Formula 1 round in Barcelona was won by Max Verstappen. The two-time world champion also leads the individual standings. The next Grand Prix will be held in Canada on June 18th.
