Italian motorcycle racer Francesco Bagnaia was involved in a traffic accident in Ibiza and could be prosecuted for drunk driving, according to Diario de Ibiza.
The Ducati Bagnaia rider, who won the 11th round of the MotoGP championship in the Netherlands and is fourth in the season standings, was involved in an accident around 5 a.m. local time when his car ran off the track after impact. No one was injured in the accident, but the police who arrived at the scene found the presence of alcohol in his body – 0.87 mg of ethanol per liter of exhaled air, while the norm in Spain is of 0.25mg/l. The Italian risks the deprivation of a driving license for up to four years.
On Tuesday evening, Bagnaia released a statement on social media expressing his regret and apology.
— Last night I was at a party in Ibiza with some friends, taking a break from MotoGP racing. We celebrated my victory together in Assen. After leaving the party at three in the morning, I drove into a roundabout, after which the front wheels of the car ended up in a ditch. No other vehicle or person was involved in the incident. A police alcohol test determined that I had drunk more than allowed by Spanish law. I’m so sorry for what happened: I’m practically a teetotaler and it was a mistake I shouldn’t have made. I apologize and I assure you that I learned the lesson. Never drive if you have been drinking alcohol. Thank you,” wrote the Italian.
For the moment, no sanction is known against the pilot by the Ducati team or the championship.
Last season, 25-year-old Bagnaia became MotoGP runner-up, losing only to Frenchman Fabio Quartararo.
