Japanese racing driver Yoshimasa Sugawara took part in the Africa Eco Race rally marathon; the 82-year-old athlete will drive an SUV.
The race start ceremony took place on December 30 in Monaco, after which the rally participants traveled by ferry to Nador (Morocco). The first stage of the Africa Eco Race is scheduled for January 2 and ends on January 14 in Dakar (Senegal). The total length of the route is approximately 6,000 kilometers.
In the Africa Eco Race, Sugawara will drive a Suzuki car with starting number 208.
Sugawara began his racing career in 1965. The Japanese participated in the Dakar Rally continuously from 1983 to 2019 and also has 20 consecutive podium finishes (1989-2009) – both achievements are included in the Guinness Book of Records. At the Dakar, Sugawara competed in three categories: motorcycles, SUVs and trucks. The Japanese also participated in the Silk Way Rally.
In 2023, the gathering did not take place due to flooding in Senegal.
