Formula 1 could change the points system from next season, Motorsport reports.
According to the publication, the number of drivers receiving points at the end of the race could increase from 10 to 12. Underdog teams that rarely finish in the top 10 are trying to lobby for reform.
It is reported that the discussion will take place next week. To have the reform adopted, the votes of six out of ten teams are necessary.
Now points based on race results are awarded according to the following scheme (places from first to tenth): 25 – 18 – 15 – 12 – 10 – 8 – 6 – 4 – 2 – 1.
The reform assumes that there will be no change for the first 7; new rules will apply to those who finish between 8th and 12th place. For 8th place they will give 5 points, for 9th – 4, for 10th – 3, for 11th – 2. for 12th – 1.
The current system has been in place since 2010. Since 2003, points have been awarded to the top eight drivers, and since 1991 to six.
After four races this season, three teams – Alpin, Williams and Sauber – are without points.
