The official’s decision helped Verstappen win the league title
Former racing director Formula 1 Michael Masi said that he still receives insults and threats after his decision at the final Grand Prix last season in Abu Dhabi.
“I felt like the most hated person in the world. I was threatened with death. People said they would come for me and my family.”
“There were constant insults on social media. And they keep doing it. Not only on Facebook, but also on LinkedIn, which should be a professional business platform.”
Masi decided to restart the race on the last lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after several laps of the drivers behind the safety car. As a result, Red Bull pilot Max Verstappen overtook Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton to become world champion.
On December 15, the FIA announced that it was investigating the events on the last lap of the controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, as well as the actions of Formula 1 racing director Michael Masi. The official was suspended from work, indicating that he made a “human error”, but acted in “good faith” in doing so.
On Sunday, July 31, the Hungarian Grand Prix will take place. The beginning is at 16:00 Kyiv time.
