The director of the English team detailed the reasons behind the promotion of the Argentine in the highest category of world motorsport. He emphasized the team’s commitment to developing internal talent to ensure its future growth.
James Vowles, Williams chief of staff, revealed that at the time of the replacement of Logan Sargeant in Formula 1 there were three candidates considered, they included Liam Lawson, Mick Schumacher and the Argentine Franco Colapinto. Finally, The decision fell to the 21-year-old Argentinea bet from its pilot academy.
Sargeant, who is in his second season in F1, has had a difficult time, including a costly accident at Zandvoort during practice, which led Vowles to decide on a change midway through the championship.
At a conference in Monza, Vowles explained: “The choices are clear: Lawson, Mick and Franco. With Liam, the contractual situation at Red Bull does not allow us to move forward. So the decision comes down to Mick or Franco“.
Vowles noted that although Schumacher had shown great progress since his time at Haas and played key roles as a test driver at Alpine, Mercedes and McLaren, the choice was leaning towards Colapinto.
The man from Pilar is deeply involved in Williams’ development, both in the simulator and on the track. Besides, He is having an outstanding debut season in Formula 2where he added a victory and two more podiums.
Franco Colapinto, to the limit in FP1 at Monza
We studied whether to bring Mick, who sure does a great job, or invest in a talent who is already part of our academy and has shown significant progress on the data we hold”Vowles added.
The Williams boss also emphasized that, despite Schumacher’s experience, none of the candidates stand out, but Colapinto represents an investment in the team’s future. “Logan and Mick are good, but nothing special. Mick would have brought more experience, but Franco has already driven our car in practice sessions, and his progress is obvious.”he pointed out.
Finally, Vowles pressed that His election reflects a commitment to the team’s future. “William has always believed in developing new talent. Investing in Franco not only shows our faith in him, but also our dedication to the long-term vision”he concluded.
