Ukrainian athletes cannot be broken: the story of 13-year-old kart driver Bondarev, who, after 10 complex operations, is already preparing to return to the track

At the end of April, the rising star of motorsport, 13-year-old Ukrainian kart driver Oleksandr Bondarev had a severe accident in Spain, on the track where one of the stages of the European Championship was held. The pilot sustained severe leg injuries as a result of the collision.

Before the incident, the young man held a leading position in the standings, became the winner of the WSK Super Master Series and won several more victories for his country.

By the time of the accident, Bondarev was driving eighth, trying to get on the podium. The opponent’s kart, Russian Dmitry Matveev, ran into the front bumper of the Ukrainian’s car and then ran over our pilot’s back and helmet. Alexander’s kart turned 180 degrees in the middle of the track in the direction of the oncoming movement of other karts of the peloton. One of the pilots, unfortunately, could not go around Alexander, which led to a head-on collision of two karts. The race was stopped and the injured were treated. The Ukrainian suffered the most damage, and he underwent the first operation on the same day in the hospital closest to the track.

In two months, Alexander underwent 10 more operations. The most difficult for him at that time were the racing weekends, in which he could not take part, but he watched the races, analyzed the rivals and imagined what he would have done in their place.

I didn’t want to lose my sports shape, therefore, already in the hospital, Alexander adapted his training to the current state. These were mostly upper body exercises.

All this time he was supported by family, friends and visited by colleagues in sports. A pleasant surprise was the support from Charles Leclerc, a Formula 1 driver who plays for Ferrari. Alexander shared a video message from the Monegasque racer on his social media pages.

Of the entertainment, the most interesting at that time was the collection of the Lego constructor. After being discharged, the guy had a collection of about 50 large exhibits, which he jokingly calls “a museum in honor of my broken leg.”

After being discharged from the hospital, the young man is not shy about demonstrating new stages of his recovery on his social networks, inspiring and inspiring others. Alexander dreams of returning to the track for the victories that are so needed after this ordeal.

His history of overcoming obstacles on the way to the desired success is an example not only for athletes, but for everyone: despite the huge challenges, he never lost the desire to continue to fight for victory!

After two intense months in the hospital and many efforts, the Ukrainian managed to take the first step. He will continue to work to recover 100%, and will also continue to fight for his dreams on the track, again competing and enjoying karting and giving victories to Ukraine.
