Easter guide: 10 titles to watch in streaming

From Ben-Hur (1959) and The Passion of the Christ (2004) to Son of God (2014), in animation and documentary format, we review here some essential productions related to these dates available on the main digital platforms.

*The Passion of the Christ (2004) – Star+

Mel Gibson features the most famous depiction of Jesus in the 21st century . The film begins shortly before Jesus (Jim Caviezel) is betrayed by Judas (Luca Lionello), tried and forced to carry the cross on which he would be crucified.

* Last Days in the Desert (2015) – Prime Video

Rodrigo García directs and writes this film which shows Jesus as he wanders the desert and encounters Satan. Both roles (never identified by name) are played by Ewan McGregor, and cinematography is by Mexican Emmanuel Lubezki (the ghost).

*The Passion (2008) – HBO Max

HBO and the BBC join forces in this miniseries that covers everything from Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to his resurrection. Briton Joseph Mawle (Benjen Stark in Game of Thrones) plays Jesus.

*Child of God (2014) – Prime Video

Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado steps into the shoes of Jesus in this film adaptation of the miniseries The Biblewhose History was created in 2013. In 138 minutes, it synthesizes from its birth to its resurrection.

*Amen: Francisco Responds (2023) – Star+

Directed by filmmakers Jordi Évole and Marius Sánchez, this special revolves around Pope Francis and his encounter with ten young people of different ages and backgrounds. In the conversation, topics such as migration, feminism, abuse in the Church and abortion are discussed.

* Ben Hur (1959) – HBO Max

An Easter classic. Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), son of a noble Jerusalem family, and Messala (Stephen Boyd), who leads the invading army, star in a colossal feud in ancient Rome. In an ephemeral appearance, Claude Heater and José Greci incarnate respectively Jesus and his mother.

*The Resurrection of Christ (2016) – Netflix

American production which has Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Clavius, the Roman centurion appointed by Pontius Pilate to investigate the mysterious disappearance of Jesus’ body and rumors of his supposed resurrection.

* The Prince of Egypt (1998) – Prime Video

Before doing Mother! (2017) and The whale (2022), Darren Aronofsky pulled off one of Hollywood’s most unique takes on a passage from the Bible.

Noah (Russell Crowe) is given the divine mission to build an ark to save the world from an impending flood. The cast is completed by Jennifer Connelly, Ray Winstone, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman and Anthony Hopkins.

*The Two Popes (2019) – Netflix

Nominated for three categories of the Oscars in 2020, the film by Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles studies the link between the last two leaders of the Catholic Church: Pope Benedict XVI (Anthony Hopkins) and his successor, Pope Francis (Jonathan Pryce). .
