Shonda Rhimes, the creator of the hit series Bridgerton, launched the new series which delves deep into the past of Queen Charlotte, a figure who really existed and whom Rhimes studied in order to tell the story in her own way.
The precious details in the dresses, the extravagant hairstyles, the grand carriages driven by shiny-furred horses, the agony, the mystery and lots (lots) of romance. The period series are, without a doubt, the perfect time machine to go back in history to the times of yesteryear that one would like to experience, all from the comfort of his armchair.
For that, Bridgerton It was one of the great successes of shonda rhymes the creator, showrunner and executive producer, whose project is already heading into its third season.
But in this universe, decided to extend the reign with a prequel in mini-series format of one of the most beloved and significant characters: queen charlotte . With her, she takes us back in time to meet a young, recently married Charlotte (played by India Amarteifio) while we jump back in time to follow the adult queen we all know (Golda Rosheuvel).
With the intense and determined attitude of the monarch, says Rhimes, in a conversation to which The third he accepted, which didn’t think twice when presented with the opportunity to bring it to the Netflix screen.

What led you to create this series?
First, I’ve always been obsessed with Queen Charlotte. He’s a fascinating character. And I’ve always been haunted by Lady Danbury and Violet and all those people whose stories aren’t often told in depth.
But what finally pushed me to do it is that Ted Sarandos (CEO of Netflix) called me and said his stepmother was obsessed with Queen Charlotte. And he asked me if I wanted to do something about it. And I said yes right away. Not just because Ted asked me to, but because I loved the idea.

Queen Charlotte really existed, how did you approach the creation of the character which is obviously partly based on a historical figure?
We are very clear that this world and Queen Charlotte – who is a real historical figure – is not a history lesson. It is a fiction inspired by facts. It’s very important to me that people understand that, because I’m telling the story of Queen Charlotte of Bridgerton, not Queen Charlotte of England. . It’s not this world. It’s essential to make this distinction, so you can tell the story with the freedom you need to do so.

And what excited you most about immersing yourself in a different era than the one Bridgerton’s story belongs to?
I loved the ability to immerse myself in a completely different time period. Fashion is different, furniture is different, customs are different… I really enjoyed being able to explore this world. The contrast between Georgian England and Regency England was, in my opinion, very interesting.

What are some of the real historical facts that you decided to include?
One was the fact that king george was a farmer . They called him “Farmer George” and “The Farmer King” back then. And also the idea that he was very fond of astronomy. It’s true that he built one of the first observatories of its kind, not necessarily at that time or in that place, but he built the observatory, it really happened.
And the transit of Venus is a real astronomical phenomenon, which happened at this time. We are investigating it. Another real fact, but with which we also take liberties, is Charlotte’s rush to produce an heir . It happened, this rush was real.
The real Queen Charlotte was much older when it happened and did not live to see the birth of the daughter who would become Queen Victoria. But I loved the idea that she wanted to secure her inheritance. And I loved the idea that she wanted to see the fruits of this endeavor, which was great.

What themes of race, class, and royalty did you want to explore with this story?
I haven’t thought about it specifically, in terms of exploring race, class and royalty, but it’s inherent. You can’t write these characters or be in this world without exploring race and class. And, at times, I felt it was imperative to show the difference between the life Queen Charlotte led and the life she leads now. And how it falls into the account of this change. She comes from a place that is already integrated and well trained, but here in England she is a foreigner, she is new.

What would you like to tell us about the Great Experience, which is part of young Charlotte’s journey?
The Grand Experiment is one of the big things I wanted to explore in this series. Especially around Charlotte’s arrival in England. In the Bridgerton years, we always talk about how Queen Charlotte and King George made possible this new England, where we see a fully integrated society, where everyone has titles.
So I wanted to show how it was done. , and the role of Lady Agatha Danbury and the mother of King George. It was very interesting to see how it all turned out. So I wanted to show this idea that the society we knew so well in Bridgerton was, at some point, an experiment.
