The profitable business of the influencer who launched an AI-powered ‘virtual girlfriend’

American Caryn Marjorie has generated $70,000 just from a week of beta testing her new project, with which she says she seeks to help “cure loneliness”.

Caryn Marjorie, 23, wanted to reach as many of her followers as possible, so she made a clone of herself using artificial intelligence (AI).

The influencer, who has 1.85 million followers on Snapchat and more than 227,000 in instagram has launched a voice-based, AI-powered chatbot that it hopes will “cure loneliness”.

Called CarynAI, the chatbot is described on its website as a “virtual girlfriend”. It allows fans of Marjorie to “enjoy private, personalized conversations” with an AI version of the influencer, the chatbot website claims.

The bot went viral, with Marjorie making headlines, garnering backlash and even receiving a few death threats. The bot has also sparked the debate over the ethics of corporate chatbots, notes NBC News.

Caryn says herself, “We’re restructuring what she can and can’t do, because one of the first things my fans and early users did was push her beyond her limits. I work around the clock to make sure CarynAI stays in and out of what I wanted it to be: a tool to heal loneliness.”

As the influencer explains, she captured her “unique voice, captivating personality, and distinctive demeanor,” to make users feel like they were talking to her and not the AI-generated copy.

Caryn enlisted the help of Forever Voices, a company that trained the CarynAI model using 2,000 hours of Marjorie’s YouTube content to create an “immersive AI experience,” notes NBC News.

They then used GPT-4 to create a realistic version of the young woman who behaves based on Caryn’s natural behavior. The same company has also created chatbots from other influencers, so Caryn isn’t the first to have an AI version of herself.

Via Twitter, Forever Voices CEO John Meyer said he was “proud of our team for the thousands of hours of work put into this”, calling the partnership with Marjorie an “incredible step forward in the future of the interaction between AI and humans”.

According to a Fortune report, CarynAI generated $71,610 in revenue after a week of “virtual girlfriend” beta testing. Fans pay $1 per minute to use the chatbot and there are currently over 1,000 users.
