President Emmanuel Macron sparked controversy in France by downing a bottle of Corona with Toulouse rugby players after winning the French league title over the weekend.
A video shared on social networks and on television shows the the French president, Emmanuel Macron 45 years old, receiving a bottle of Corona beer in the locker room of the Toulouse rugby players after the final played on Saturday at the Stade de France Saint-Denis .
After being invited to drink it in one gulp, the centrist president empties the bottle in 17 seconds to the cheers and cries of the technical staff and the players of the Toulouse who beat La Rochelle 29-26.
Although Macron is a sports fan and often visits the locker rooms of French teams, such as during the World Cup final in Qatar when Argentina beat France, this image left no one indifferent.
“Toxic masculinity in political leadership in image,” criticized Green MP Sandrine Rousseau on Twitter.
Pro-government MP Jean-René Cazeneuve, however, defended that it is simply a “president sharing the joy of 23 players and participating in their traditions”.
Emmanuel Macron is seeking to revive his power and his image after his unpopular pension reform caused his popularity to plummet to a historic low.
But associations and doctors specializing in the fight against addictions have criticized the fact that the president is shown drinking a beer in one gulp, when he should be setting “the example with healthy behavior”.
According to the French Ministry of Health in a 2021 note, alcohol consumption is linked to the deaths of nearly 49,000 people per year.
