Santiago among the most congested cities in the world How many hours do you waste in the car per year?

A study that places Santiago among the most congested cities in the world explains the time wasted driving during rush hour.

TomTom has released the results of the TomTom Traffic Index, a study that measures travel time, fuel costs and CO2 emissions from 390 cities in 56 countries across five continents.

The results from the fleet management company are interesting and highlight the complications of traffic congestion encountered in Santiago, one of the 14 cities assessed in South America.

Our capital ranked 10th in the subcontinent as the most congested city, while it ranked 41st in the world.

To arrive at these figures, TomTom collected data from a variety of sources from its consumers, taking a representative sample of data covering 543 billion km in 2022.

In this ranking, which measures the entire city, the list of the most congested cities was led by Bogotá (Colombia), followed by Manila (Philippines) and Sapporo (Japan).

VEHICLE CONGESTION

According to the registry, in Bogotá, drivers take 24 minutes and 40 seconds to cover 10 kilometers at an average speed of 19 km/h, while in Santiago it takes 16 minutes to cover the same distance, at an average speed of 31 km/h. .

The study also assessed the time required to cover the same distances during normal traffic hours and during peak hours. This record allowed us to verify how many hours are lost in a car at the time of the greatest congestion, a rather worrying number.

Below are the main figures of the TomTom Traffic 2022 study, with the most congested cities in the world and the position in which Santiago is located.

Figures from Santiago de Chile

As for a more in-depth analysis of traffic congestion in Santiago de Chile, TomTom Traffic, considering the downtown area of the city (circle with a radius of 5 km that covers the busiest areas) and also the whole of the metropolitan area (circle that covers the city and nearby rural areas), it was specified:

  • Santiago is in position 41 in the world ranking of the most congested cities considering the city center. If we consider the metropolitan area, the Chilean capital is in 69th place.
  • The average time to cover 10 km in the city center was 20 minutes, unchanged from the previous year. Across the metropolitan area, the time was 16 minutes.
  • The journey time in the city center in 2022 was 199 hours, which could have been used to read about 39 books.
  • Travel time throughout the metropolitan area in 2022 was 152 hours, which could have been used to read about 30 books.
  • The money spent during the 199 hours of travel through the center was approximately $488,423, of which $127,086 was exclusively due to congestion.
  • The money spent during the 152 hours of travel in the metropolitan area was approximately $450,643, of which $95,646 was exclusively due to congestion.
  • With one working day per week that people would have stayed home (Wednesday, which is the busiest), on a 10 km journey, they would have saved 41 hours in the car.
  • If we take the whole city, with one working day per week that people would have stayed at home (Wednesday, which is the busiest), on a 10 km journey, they would have saved 31 hours by car.
  • The additional time spent by car to drive in the city center at the busiest times is 95 hours (3 days and 23 hours), an increase of 6 hours and 4 minutes compared to 2021.
  • Taking the whole city, the extra time spent in the car driving during the hours of greatest congestion was 66 hours (2 days and 18 hours), a figure which increased by 3 hours and 4 minutes compared to 2021.
