From city cars to 4x4s to sports cars: Barbie cars in the real world

The most famous doll in history has inspired several special editions and customizations in the real world, with the color pink and jewels as protagonists. Here we tell you the details of these creations.

Just hours after the premiere of the Barbie movie, madness for the famous Mattel doll is unleashed, with pink invading social media, shop windows and all merchandising. And the automotive world too, because throughout its history this icon of popular culture has inspired several special editions and customizations with the characteristic bubblegum color and various details of all its taste.

Of course, before talking about the other Barbie cars, we must start with the original, that is to say with the first generation of Chevrolet Corvette, the legendary C1, which now appears in the film with Margot Robbie. Choice that is not whimsical since it is the doll’s first car/accessory.

It was a set released by Mattel in 1962 that became an object of desire for car enthusiasts and Barbie fans.

Today’s movie print recreates this toy version, showing round headlights and a distinctive white area between the front wheels and the doors. Of course, unlike the original model which had a 240hp V8, Barbie’s sports car is now electric.

City cars, SUVs and 4x4s

In 2009, on the occasion of Barbie’s 50th anniversary, Fiat and Volkswagen team up with the toymaker for two charming special editions in honor of the most famous doll in history.

This is how the Fiat 500 Barbie and the New Beetle “Malibu Barbie” were born. The first of them is distinguished by its pink color developed with lacquer paint, similar to nail polish, as well as by various diamonds arranged on the antenna, the windows, the hubcaps, the steering wheel and the interior controls.

The Fiat 500 Barbie’s cabin isn’t far off either, with candy pink alcantara upholstery and shiny natural silk and viscose floor mats. But undoubtedly the most useful detail are the sliding spaces (including one for lipstick) and the small LED mirrors, for a last-minute touch-up.

Plus, and just like true accessory junkie Barbie, the model also has a fun matching cover that protects the vehicle from the elements, and carefully decorated with the veteran doll’s logo.

For its part, the Volkswagen New Beatle “Malibu Barbie” is colored in fluorescent pink and also sports luminous decorations on the handles and mirrors, as well as chic details such as brake calipers and a pink engine, or even a vanity in the trunk.

The interior of the car, riddled with the Barbie logo, features white and pale pink leather upholstery and a fuchsia console customized with jewels and crowned with photos of Barbie’s best friends, and of course, her lovebird Ken.

Last year, Maserati, in collaboration with Mattel, presented a special edition of the Grecale, inspired by this popular culture icon, limited to just two examples and the work of the trident brand’s personalization department.

The Maserati Grecale Barbie features Barbie’s signature pink color for its exterior decor, along with the Barbie emblem on the C-pillars and just in front of the doors. Inside, the attachment to this tone is seen in the doors, the center console, the armrests and the seams of the seats.

Under the hood is the engine of the Maserati Grecale Trofeo. It’s a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 that develops 530 horsepower. Its top speed is 285 km/h and it accelerates from 0 to 100 in 3.8 seconds.

This collaboration is part of a solidarity context, since part of the sale price will be donated to the Barbie Dream Gap Project, a global charity initiative that aims to create equal opportunities for girls around the world.

In the world of Barbie, you can’t miss SUVs, for doll’s off-road adventures. Consequently, there are then customizations of the Jeep Wrangler and the Ford Bronco in his honor.

The last of them has just appeared on the web, prepared by Bayshore Automotive in Florida, USA. Nicknamed “Barbie Dream Bronco”, it has all the details for Barbies and Kens to notice.

Thus, it sports a matte pink paint that contrasts with the moldings, wheel arches and white side supports. The tow hooks and “Bronco” badging, meanwhile, are trimmed in metallic pink. The spotlights also change color, in the toy icon’s favorite hue.

It sits on 20-inch wheels wrapped in 37-inch tires and comes with a kit that increases ground clearance an additional five inches.

Finally, and in case Barbie dies, which seems unlikely, since she’s a toy doll, basically. But in any case, if that “happened”, they could transfer her to the cemetery in a hearse as peculiar as this one. In this one they carry the coffin of actor Roger Lloyd-Pack and the photo was taken outside St Paul’s Church in Covent Garden, after his funeral on February 13, 2014 in London, England.
