Know the places where you cannot park in Chile

This type of offense is among the 10 most committed by Chileans, so it is important to know where to place your vehicle before suffering a sanction.

A few days ago we told you about the 10 most committed offenses in our country and among these, “reported prohibited parking” comes in third position with 64,722 penalties and “inappropriate parking” in fourth position with 34,538 .

Obviously, if we add the two, we get a total of 99,260 which shows that it is a very common offense in our country. It is for this reason that we wanted to remember where parking is prohibited in our country so that you do not have a day of fury like Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola did recently.

Before that, we want to differentiate these two offenses as the Carabinero indicates and as the Law says, the difference between illegal parking and prohibited parking is specifically a differentiation made by the carabineros in the AUPOL (police automation system), the improper parking it refers to park in the parking lot (sidewalk space), next to a corner, a bus stop, among others.

On the other hand, the Parking in a prohibited and/or marked area refers – for example – to a street that indicates the whole block stop and no parking or where there is a specific traffic sign prohibiting it.

Take note! According to Highway code 18 290 According to articles 154 and 155, the places where it is forbidden to park or stop are the following:

  • Where official signs prohibit it
  • On sidewalks, pedestrian crossings or places intended solely for their transit
  • Double file, compared to other vehicles parked or stopped on the road next to the ditch
  • On the sides, on or between pedestrian shelters, plabandas or bandejones
  • inside a crossroads
  • On the side or opposite side of any obstruction to traffic, excavation or work on a roadway
  • on cycle paths
  • On bridges, tunnels, elevated structures, and underpasses and overpasses
  • On roads or embankments of public roads with two or more traffic lanes in the same direction
  • Less than five meters from taps and 10 meters from the entrance to a pumping station or substation
  • Within twenty meters of a level crossing
  • Within ten meters of a bend
  • Less than twenty meters from the vertical panels indicating the existence of a collective locomotion vehicle stop. Municipalities can increase this distance
  • Within three meters of the doors of churches, educational establishments, hotels and performance or entertainment halls, during peak hours or when receiving the public
  • In front of garage doors of private residences and commercial parking lots
  • Within ten meters of a ‘STOP’, ‘Give way’ hazard warning sign such as ‘SCHOOL’, ‘CURVES’ or ‘NARROW BRIDGE’.
  • Within 15 meters of the main entrance gate of military, police or gendarmerie facilities in Chile

It is important to note that the Chilean police and tax or municipal inspectors can remove abandoned or parked vehicles without their driver, in violation of the provisions of this law, sending them to the premises that, for this purpose, the municipality must activate and maintain.

In addition, transfer, storage and other costs incurred by the authority for these reasons, will be borne by the offender and may not remove the vehicle from storage without prior payment.

Finally, each of these two offenses is classified as serious, which means that its value varies between 1 and 1.5 UTM, or between $63,199 and $94,798.
