Against the continent’s best teams: Selknam already knows his program for Super Rugby Americas

2024 begins with rugby for Selknam. The national franchise has already confirmed its programming for the new edition of Super Rugby Americas, the most important team tournament on the continent. There will be at least 12 matches against teams from Argentina, Uruguay, the United States and Colombia, among others.

A key opportunity for a workforce which was mainly present during the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France. Most of the team that traveled to Europe will be part of this team in 2024 we therefore expect an increase in the level of the Chileans, who have always been the protagonists of the event.

For this edition, the teams that will compete for the championship will be the American Raptors of the United States; Dogos XV of Argentina; Yacare XV of Paraguay; Brazilian cobras; Pampas of Argentina; Peñarol Rugby from Uruguay; and Selknam Rugby, Chile’s first professional franchise.

Tournament will begin on February 16 with a first phase which will last until March 24 . Of course, the national team will make its debut on February 27 against Yacaré XV, since it will have a free day on the opening day. After the Easter holidays, the competition will resume, with a second phase from April 12 to May 24.

Depending on Selknam’s results, there will be the possibility of playing the semi-finals of the tournament. These will be played between June 7 and 8 and will then move on to the Super Rugby Americas grand final scheduled for June 14, 2024.

This year Peñarol from Uruguay will arrive as the big favorite of the competition . The growth of rugby in their country and the two consecutive titles they hold in the tournament are the main supports of a team that beat Dogos XV 23-17 in the final last year. Selknam, for their part, just finished fourth, although their best performance came in 2022 when they reached the final.

Super Rugby Americas (formerly known as SLAR) has played a key role in the development of the sport in the country, allowing local players to play matches against elite players every year beyond international windows. Of the 34 players that Pablo Lemoine chose to go to France, 33 participated in the tournament in one of its editions. . 29 of the Teros and 6 of the Pumas also share this statistic.
